You can have the most expensive, science-backed skincare products in the world — and still not see results if you're applying them in the wrong order. Layering matters. Absorption matters. At ELEV8 SKIN LAB, we don't just formulate products that work — we make sure you know how to use them. Here's the definitive guide to skincare application order.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
Skincare layering follows one non-negotiable principle: apply products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest. This ensures each product can penetrate the skin properly before being sealed in by the next layer.
Think of it like this — a heavy cream applied before a serum creates a barrier that blocks the serum from reaching your skin. Sequence is everything.
Your AM Application Order
1. Cleanser
Start with a clean canvas. Even if your skin feels clean from the night before, overnight oil and bacteria build up on the surface. A gentle AM cleanse preps your skin to absorb everything that follows.
2. Toner or Essence (optional)
Applied to damp skin, a toner balances pH and adds a first layer of hydration. Think of it as priming the skin for actives.
3. Vitamin C Serum
Your morning antioxidant shield. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals from UV and pollution before they can damage your skin. Apply to clean, dry skin and let it absorb fully.
4. Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your face — it needs targeted care. Pat gently with your ring finger; never rub.
5. Moisturizer
Lock in your serum and support your skin barrier. Choose a lightweight formula for daytime that won't pill under SPF.
6. SPF 30+
The final — and most critical — step of every AM routine. Apply generously and reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors. No exceptions.
Your PM Application Order
1. Cleanser (double cleanse if wearing SPF or makeup)
First pass removes surface buildup. Second pass cleans the skin itself. Never skip this step — actives applied to unclean skin are wasted.
2. Exfoliant (2–3x per week)
AHA or BHA acids resurface and refine. Use on clean, dry skin and wait 10–15 minutes before the next step to avoid diluting the active.
3. Treatment Serum (Retinol, Peptides, or Targeted Actives)
This is where transformation happens. Retinol accelerates cell turnover; peptides signal collagen production. Apply a pea-sized amount and let it fully absorb.
4. Hydrating Serum
Layer hyaluronic acid or a moisture-binding serum over your treatment to counteract any dryness from actives and plump the skin barrier.
5. Eye Cream
Same as AM — consistent use morning and night is what delivers results over time.
6. Rich Moisturizer
Your PM moisturizer should be richer than your daytime formula. This is your skin's overnight recovery layer — don't skimp.
7. Facial Oil (optional)
The final seal. A few drops of facial oil pressed over your moisturizer locks everything in and gives skin that signature ELEV8 glow by morning.
Common Mistakes That Cancel Out Your Results
- Applying SPF before moisturizer — it needs to be the last step to work
- Using retinol and vitamin C together — they work against each other; keep them AM/PM
- Skipping the wait time after exfoliants — rushing layers dilutes actives
- Rubbing instead of pressing — always press products into skin, never drag
The ELEV8 Standard
Every product we formulate is designed to work within a complete routine — not in isolation. When you layer correctly, the results are exponential. That's not marketing. That's science.
